AUDIO: Does Logging Forests Lower Fire Risk and Is Woody Biomass Clean Renewable Energy?

The timber and bioenergy industry, along with certain politicians and conservation groups, are amping up the call for “fuel reduction” logging in our nation’s forests in an effort to prevent wildfire and provide a source of alternative energy.
Yet emerging science demonstrates the ecological importance of wildfire, contests the effectiveness of logging to reduce fire risk, and disputes the alleged climate benefits of biomass energy.
On February 18, 2016 The Biomass Monitor spoke with Dr. Dominick DellaSala, Chief Scientist of the Geos Institute, who discussed the ecological benefits of wildfire, and the impacts of “thinning” forests for biomass energy.
The Biomass Monitor conference calls are held the 3rd Thursday of every month. Go to thebiomassmonitor.org for more information and to subscribe to our free, monthly online journal investigating the whole story on bioenergy, biomass, and biofuels.
