An economic development workshop will be held in Camptonville on Thursday to generate interest from local businesses and entrepreneurs in being part of a business district based around a proposed biomass facility.

“The workshop will provide information on the resources, requirements and opportunities involved with starting a business in Yuba County, and on the possible entrepreneurial opportunities to join the planned business campus,” said Regine Miller, Camptonville Community Partnership bioenergy project manager, in an email.

CCP, a nonprofit organization facilitating for the biomass facility, is partnering with Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corp. to host the workshop. The meeting will be from 9 a.m.-noon at the Alcouffe Center in Oregon House.

The idea to establish the Forest Biomass Business Center near Camptonville was conceived in 2013 by representatives from the partnership and the Yuba Watershed Protection and Fire Safe Council.

Miller said the goals of the facility are to create more employment in the area, reduce the risk of wildfires, enhance forest health, reduce air emissions from open pile burning in the region and produce renewable energy.

In a study done by CCP in 2015, the facility is estimated to cost about $19.6 million. Miller said the final cost will vary depending on how the construction process goes, tax credits awarded for the facility, as well as specific grants applied for.
The proposed forest biomass facility would be at the site of an old sawmill that closed in the ’90s in Celestial Valley. If constructed, it could generate up to 3 megawatts of electricity through direct combustion technology. It would include a single boiler and a turbine generator.
