U.K.-based Active Energy Group plc has announced its CoalSwitch plant in Utah officially became operational the week of Feb. 5 and is producing the company’s high-calorific, high-bulk-density biomass pellet. Active Energy said biomass fuel produced at the facility will be prepared for delivery under offtake agreements that are already in place.
According to the company, CoalSwitch is produced primarily from forestry waste and other industrial cellulose waste products. The product can be fired with coal in existing coal-fired power plants at any ratio, up to 100 percent.

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced an open meeting of the Biomass Research and Development Technical Advisory Committee on Nov. 15-16 in Washington, D.C.
According to information published in the Federal Register, the meeting aims to develop advice and guidance that promotes research and development leading to the production of biobased fuels and products. The agenda is expected to include an update on USDA and DOE biomass research and development activities and presentations from industry, national laboratories, and federal agencies on improving feedstock supply chain cost and efficiency and upgrading of biomass into feedstocks.

The Procter & Gamble Co. and Constellation, a subsidiary of Exelon Corp. recently announced the completion of a 50-MW biomass-fueled combined-heat-and-power (CHP) plant located at one of P&G’s largest U.S. facilities. Constellation owns and operates the plant, which supplies steam to P&G’s Albany, Georgia, paper manufacturing facility and generates electricity for the local utility, Georgia Power. Additionally, steam from the plant will be used to power an 8.5-MW steam-to-electricity generator at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, helping the base increase its energy security and utilize renewable sources to meet energy demands.

The Arizona Corporation Commission has ordered Arizona Public Service to evaluate forest bioenergy as part of its resource portfolio.
A May memorandum from Commissioner Boyd Dunn instructed the opening of a docket to explore forest bioenergy, and its current role and impact in Arizona. The memo emphasized the important role forest bioenergy serves in maintaining Arizona’s forests, woodlands, and watersheds while creating energy for the grid. “Our history is riddled with examples of the devastating economic, cultural, and ecological impact of Arizona wildfires,” it stated. “In addition, state watersheds, including streams, lakes and reservoirs are at risk of contamination from hazardous runoff coming from the burned areas. Maintaining healthy forests and woodlands through on-the-ground restoration activities reduces the risk and severity of these wildfires.”

The U.S. EPA has proposed an amendment that will add additional treated railroad ties to its list of categorical nonwaste fuels under the Non-Hazardous Secondary Materials Rule.
Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, NHSM rulemakings identify which nonhazardous secondary materials are or aren’t solid wastes when burned in combustion units. If material is a solid waste under RCRA, a combustion unit burning it is required to meet the Clean Air Act Section 129 emission standards for solid waste incineration units. If the material is not a solid waste, combustion units are required to meet the CAA Section 112 emission standards for commercial, industrial, and institutional boilers, much less stringent standards.

New Hampshire state officials recently celebrated National Bioenergy Day by holding an open house to recognize the completion of a new wood biomass boiler that will heat a major state building in Concord.
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the Department of Health and Human Services facility on Hazen Drive in Concord will be heated this winter with sustainably sourced local wood biomass chips instead of natural gas.
The project was completed through an innovative financing mechanism in partnership with ConEdison Solutions, a national energy services company. It is part of a comprehensive $12.7 million energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrade for facilities in the Meldrim Thomson State Office Park East.
